Let’s Talk (Openly) About Gender

A training designed for teachers, school counselors and social workers

Summary:

The way we talk about gender has changed a lot in the past decade, and more recently, the topic has become common political fodder, leading to misinformation and misunderstanding in the general American population.

Our young folks are absorbing and internalizing this information. Trans and gender-diverse youth are facing intense pressure as well as challenges in identity development and self-esteem, resulting in a higher risk for poor mental health outcomes.

The adults in school settings are responsible not only for providing a culture of inclusivity and safety but also for developing a clear strategy to identify and respond to transphobic remarks and the skills to proactively support positive identity development in all youth. This two-hour training addresses these responsibilities and more.

This workshop style training will answer the following questions:

  • How much does gender matter?

  • Why the heck are they using THAT pronoun?

  • What language do I need to pay attention to beyond pronouns (spoiler alert: there's a lot)?

  • How does it feel to someone when I misgender them or make assumptions about their gender?

  • How do I recognize transphobic comments and how do I productively respond?

  • It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.
